Buying a Whisky Cask with CannyCask: What You Buy, How It’s Verified and How Ownership Transfers
Buying a whisky cask should be straightforward. You should know what you are buying, where it is held, how its provenance has been checked, how ownership is transferred and what happens after the purchase.

That is what CannyCask is designed to make clearer.
What are you actually buying?
When you buy through CannyCask, you are buying a whole physical whisky cask held in regulated bonded warehouse custody.
You are not buying a fraction of a cask, a pooled interest or a share in a fund.
The physical cask remains in the bonded warehouse while it matures.
Why does the warehouse matter?
The bonded warehousekeeper remains the authoritative source of truth for custody and ownership records.
CannyCask does not replace that process.
Our role is to connect the warehouse record to a verifiable digital ownership record so that provenance, custody and ownership can be independently checked.
What does DAV VERIFIED® mean?
Before a cask is listed on CannyCask, it must pass DAV VERIFIED®.
The cask details are checked against the bonded warehouse’s own records.
CannyCask and the warehouse independently verify and cryptographically sign the same record.
That creates independently verifiable evidence of the cask’s identity, provenance and bonded warehouse custody before it is offered for sale.
Verify the cask first. Align ownership second.
How does a purchase work?
The process is designed around the warehouse-confirmed ownership event.
- You select a cask on the CannyCask marketplace.
- You complete and pass our KYC identity and AML checks. CannyCask then requests a new, dedicated customer account in your own name at the bonded warehouse. You complete the warehouse onboarding directly, including accepting its applicable terms and conditions.
- Once the warehouse account has been created and acknowledged, the purchase is authorised and placed on hold. Settlement and digital ownership remain locked while the warehouse ownership transfer is completed.
- CannyCask issues a Digital Delivery Order (DDO), instructing the bonded warehouse to transfer ownership of the cask.
- The warehouse executes the ownership change in its authoritative records and returns a DDO Ack, confirming that the transfer has taken effect.
- Only once the DDO Ack is received does CannyCask release the settlement hold and complete settlement.
- The digital ownership record is then transferred to you, the buyer, aligned to the warehouse-confirmed ownership event.
The bonded warehouse remains the authoritative source of truth throughout. The digital ownership record follows the warehouse-confirmed event; it never precedes or overrides it.
What happens after you buy?
The cask remains in bonded warehouse custody.
As the owner, you may incur ongoing warehouse charges such as storage, insurance, regauging or other warehouse services depending on the cask and warehouse terms.
Over time, your options may include:
- continuing to mature the cask;
- bottling;
- transferring ownership;
- selling the cask, subject to buyer demand and market conditions.
CannyCask does not guarantee resale, liquidity or future value.
What should you check before buying any whisky cask?
Whether you buy through CannyCask or elsewhere, ask:
- Which bonded warehouse physically holds the cask?
- Can the warehouse verify the cask and its provenance?
- What evidence supports the ownership claim?
- What storage and service fees apply?
- What are the realistic options for bottling, transfer or resale?
- Is anyone making promises about future value or liquidity that cannot be guaranteed?
A legitimate cask should be able to withstand scrutiny.
